Open Market Wheat Pricing

Recognizing True Hard Red Wheat Values

  • In the open market, hard and soft wheats are viewed as two completely separate commodities, just like soybeans and corn.

  • The open market (see price chart below) traditionally pays a significantly higher price for hard wheat than soft.

  • Hard wheats have a higher basis in addition to the higher futures prices due to additional transportation costs from the west.

  • The net open market price advantage for hard wheat is usually much greater than what was reflected under the old Wheat Board pricing formula.

  • Provided the true "strong gluten" IP Wheats are kept separate, Ontario growers will enjoy the benefits of the open market.
