Recognizing True Hard Red Wheat Values

In the open market, hard and soft wheats are viewed as two completely separate commodities, just like soybeans and corn.

The open market (see price chart below) traditionally pays a significantly higher price for hard wheat than soft.

Hard wheats have a higher basis in addition to the higher futures prices due to additional transportation costs from the west.

The net open market price advantage for hard wheat is usually much greater than what was reflected under the old Wheat Board pricing formula.

Provided the true "strong gluten" IP Wheats are kept separate, Ontario growers will enjoy the benefits of the open market.
